Outdoor Education

Experiential Learning Beyond the Classroom

At the Australian International School (AIS), we believe that education extends far beyond the four walls of a classroom. Our Outdoor Education program is designed to provide students with immersive, hands-on experiences that develop resilience, teamwork, leadership, and a spirit of adventure. From Prep to Year 11, students embark on a progressive journey of outdoor learning—starting with exploratory day trips and culminating in extended expeditions both locally and internationally.

Elementary School (Prep to Year 5)

Outdoor Education in the Elementary years focuses on building confidence, independence, and an appreciation for nature. Students begin with exploratory day trips and gradually progress to overnight camps that introduce them to adventure-based learning. By the time they reach Year 5, they take part in a week-long overseas expedition, developing navigation and survival skills while fostering independence and resilience.

By the end of Elementary School, students have developed a strong foundation in outdoor skills, confidence, and adaptability, preparing them for the more demanding expeditions in Secondary School.

Secondary School (Year 6 to Year 11)

As students enter Secondary School, Outdoor Education becomes more physically and mentally demanding, emphasising leadership, teamwork, and self-reliance. Camps and expeditions provide opportunities for personal growth, problem-solving, and international service learning. Students challenge themselves with activities such as rock climbing, white-water rafting, and trekking in remote environments. In Year 10, they travel overseas to refine their outdoor skills, and in Year 11, they can take part in an international service-learning trip, contributing to meaningful community projects while developing global awareness.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a globally recognised youth development program that challenges students to build resilience, leadership, and life skills. At AIS, students in Years 9 and 10 participate in rigorous expeditions that test their endurance and determination through activities such as kayaking and hiking. The program helps them develop independence, responsibility, and perseverance—qualities that are highly valued by universities and employers worldwide.

Why Outdoor Education Matters

Outdoor Education at AIS equips students with key life skills such as critical thinking, adaptability, and problem-solving. These experiences build confidence and resilience, preparing students for future academic, professional, and personal challenges. Through our programs, students not only achieve personal milestones but also develop a sense of responsibility and global awareness—shaping them into well-rounded individuals ready to succeed in life.
