Exploring the Intensive English Stream (IES) at the Australian International School in Singapore
Are you considering an international education for your child, but concerned about language barriers? At the Australian International School (AIS), we recognise the significance of English language skills in both academic and social environments. That’s precisely why we’ve developed the Elementary School Intensive English Stream (IES), specifically tailored to assist students who aren’t native English speakers to provide English as an Additional Language (EAL) support. Grounded in the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP), the program not only enhances language proficiency but delivers a holistic teaching approach delivered by international faculty. The AIS campus, centrally located in Singapore, gives students access to a wide range of specialist facilities, over 300 after-school activities and access to a community of 50 nationalities. Let’s explore what sets our IES program apart and how it can pave the way for your child’s success.
Tailored English Language Support
AIS is committed to providing a nurturing environment where students can thrive academically and personally. Our IES program is designed for students aged 6 years to 11 years, providing comprehensive English language support with more than 26 hours of weekly instruction. Delivered within a diverse international environment boasting 50 nationalities, our curriculum is designed to foster immediate language acquisition and long-term proficiency, ensuring seamless integration into academic and social skills. Students will have the opportunity to participate in specialty classes supported by language instruction, including Music, Art, Physical Education, Sports, Library, and Mandarin.
Immersive Learning Environment
At AIS, learning extends beyond the classroom walls. IES students have the opportunity to interact with their peers in English-speaking environments during assemblies, celebrations, school trips, outdoor education, Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs), and lunchtime. This immersive approach facilitates language acquisition and cultural exchange, enriching students’ educational experiences.
Proven Pedagogical Approach
The Elementary School English Intensive Stream (IES) draws upon the successful Australian education model, incorporating the objectives outlined by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) ensuring students achieve specific grade level academic skill benchmarks. Rooted in the globally recognized International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program (PYP) framework which develops transdisciplinary thinking, international-mindedness and lifelong learning skills such as critical thinking while fostering language acquisition.
Comprehensive Curriculum
In the IES program, students engage with a diverse curriculum that encompasses English as an Additional Language (EAL), Mathematics, a Unit of Inquiry, and one additional subject based on their year level. Through focused instruction in reading, writing, listening, and speaking, students develop the foundational skills necessary for academic success.
Supportive Structure
In the Intensive English Stream, classes accommodate up to 24 students, with each class being guided by a dedicated class teacher and an English as an Additional Language (EAL) teacher. These teachers provide continuous support and encouragement throughout the student’s learning journey. Typically, students stay in the IES program for a duration of up to 12 months before moving on to a mainstream classroom setting.
Robust Assessment and Evaluation
Monitoring student progress is integral to our approach. Through a variety of assessment methods, including open-ended tasks, written and oral assessments, and learning portfolios, we track students’ development over time. Additionally, standardised tests such as the WIDA assessment provide valuable insights into language proficiency levels. Regular reporting and parent-teacher meetings ensure ongoing communication and collaboration between school and home.
