Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award: Giving Students a Competitive Edge for University Applications
At the Australian International School (AIS), we understand that academic achievement is just one piece of the university admissions puzzle. In today’s competitive landscape, universities are increasingly looking for well-rounded individuals who demonstrate resilience, leadership, adaptability, and a commitment to personal growth. That’s why the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award (DofE) plays such a valuable role in helping our students stand out.
Recognised by universities worldwide, the DofE Award offers students the opportunity to develop the kind of soft skills that are increasingly valued in higher education and beyond. Through a structured program of personal challenge and self-discovery, students at AIS build a holistic profile that goes far beyond their academic transcript.
What is the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award?
The DofE Award is a globally recognised youth development program for students aged 14 to 24. It consists of three progressive levels—Bronze, Silver, and Gold—each requiring increasing levels of commitment and responsibility. Students can start at any level, but it’s recommended to start from Bronze or Silver where possible, as each stage builds critical life skills such as time management, self-motivation, independence, and collaborative problem-solving.
At AIS, students begin their DofE journey in Years 9 and 10, participating in a series of adventurous expeditions and training programs that challenge them physically and mentally. These experiences become powerful talking points in university interviews and personal statements.
Beyond the Classroom: Building Skills Universities Value
One of the most impactful aspects of the DofE Award is its ability to develop attributes that university admissions teams actively seek. While academic grades open the door, it’s a student’s character, initiative, and ability to thrive under pressure that truly sets them apart.
The DofE Award helps students demonstrate:
- Resilience and perseverance in overcoming real-world challenges
- Leadership and teamwork through shared experiences and group problem-solving
- Adaptability and independence in unfamiliar environments
- A well-rounded personal profile that reflects commitment beyond academics
In fact, many students have found that their participation in the DofE Award has played a decisive role in their university offers—even when academic results alone may not have been enough.
Expeditions That Shape Futures
Kayaking Training at Kallang Water Sports Centre
At AIS, students take part in a two-day, one-night sea kayaking and camping expedition around Pulau Ubin—a core component of their Bronze and Silver Adventurous Journey.
Facing unpredictable weather, strong currents, and physical exhaustion, students rise to the challenge, demonstrating grit, teamwork, and problem-solving throughout the journey. From preparing meals on solid fuel stoves to navigating unfamiliar terrain, students applied their skills in real-life scenarios—developing a strong sense of independence and resilience that will serve them well in university and beyond.

A Powerful Addition to Any University Application
The DofE Award is much more than a co-curricular activity—it’s an experience that speaks volumes on a university application. It provides tangible evidence of the kind of initiative, maturity, and determination that top institutions look for.
Recent studies from the DofE Foundation reveal:
- 82% of participants said the Award inspired them to continue volunteering
- 62% felt the Award helped them make a positive impact in their communities
These statistics highlight what admissions officers already know—students who participate in the DofE Award are prepared to contribute meaningfully both inside and outside the classroom.
More Than Grades: Standing Out in a Competitive World
While academic achievement remains important—Singapore IB students averaged an impressive 38.4 in 2024—universities are increasingly looking for the whole student. In many cases, the leadership, initiative, and community commitment demonstrated through the DofE Award can tip the balance in a student’s favour.
There are even stories of students who didn’t quite meet their target grades, but were still accepted into their top-choice universities thanks to the strength of their personal statement and DofE experience.
