8 Family Activities To Do This Chinese New Year 2024

1. View the Street Light-Ups in Chinatown

Each year, locals and tourists alike always look forward to the Chinatown Street Light Up as the entire stretch is illuminated with vibrant-coloured lights and lanterns to usher in the Lunar New Year.

Stretching from New Bridge Road, Eu Tong Sen Street, all the way to Upper Cross street, this spectacle is not just a feast for the eyes but also the senses.

With the Year of the Dragon upon us this 2024, visitors can expect to see the fiery dragon display as it makes its debut.

Date: Until 9 March 2024

Location: Across the Chinatown District

2. Enjoy River Hongbao 2024

Since its first installation in 1987, River Hongbao has since grown to become Singapore’s biggest annual Chinese New Year festival in the country.

Happening at Gardens by the Bay this February, guests can look forward to countless activities all under one roof.

From lantern displays and fireworks, carnival rides, cultural shows, fringe activities for the whole family, to the much-anticipated 140-metre long Dragon-themed lantern display. All of which pay homage to the richness of Chinese culture in Singapore and beyond.

As Chingay 2024 makes its return to the F1 pit, this yearly affair is one filled with cultural acts ranging from dance numbers, singing performances, special effects displays, and so much more.

With this year’s theme “Blossom”, the 2024 parade signifies the growth and diversity between our different communities and the aspiration for people to come together as one in celebration of the New Year.

Some of these include lion dance performances, CNY snack tastings, as well as arts and crafts booths.

With these class-act performances, the SCO hopes to usher in the Year of the Dragon with a bang through their music and moving compositions.

7. Collect Gifts At Museum Roundtable Hongbao 2024

Keeping up with the yearly tradition, the Museum Roundtable Lunar New Year Hongbao campaign celebrates 10 years since it was first launched in 2014.

Compared to the other Chinese New Year festivities happening during this time, this is more of a quest than an actual event.

Members of the public can join in the fun by visiting any of the participating museums, galleries, and heritage centres and collect a set of hongbaos in the design of that particular museum as a keepsake.

Not only is this a great bonding activity for everyone but it also invites people to learn more about the arts and culture scene of Singapore.

Dates: 12 January to 9 February 2024

Location: Participating museums, galleries, and heritage centres across Singapore.
