6-year-old AIS student, Bicycles 128km Around Singapore to Raise Funds for Cambodian Children

AJ, a 6-year-old Year 1 student at the Australian International School (AIS), recently took on a remarkable challenge: cycling 128km around Singapore to raise funds for children in Cambodia. Inspired by a visit to the Angkor Kids Centre (AKC) during a family holiday, AJ set out to make a meaningful difference for a community in need.

The Inspiration Behind the Challenge

While visiting Cambodia, AJ and her family visited the Angkor Kids Centre, a non-profit organisation providing English language and computer literacy education to children in rural areas. AIS had previously donated books to the centre’s library, and AJ was able to see firsthand how these contributions were helping the local children. The visit also involved donating sports gear, which was warmly received with countless expressions of gratitude.

During her time at the centre, AJ learned about the difficult conditions the students face. The children, after a full day at their regular schools, often walk long distances to attend English classes at AKC, knowing that this extra education could be key to a better future. Despite the challenges, the children proudly maintain their modest classroom, even sweeping it clean before each session – AJ even had to help shoo a chicken away!

The Fundraising Mission

AJ was moved by the students’ determination and the challenges they face, especially the deteriorating state of the AKC’s facilities. The roof of the centre is in poor condition, and the solar power system’s batteries are old and unreliable. Determined to help, AJ discussed fundraising ideas with her parents, ultimately deciding on a biking challenge that would test her limits.

The goal was ambitious: complete the entire 128km loop around Singapore within 10 days, all while attending school during the day. AJ gave up her usual after-school activities to focus on biking, committing to cycling every day to achieve her target. The fundraising goal was set at SG$5,000 (approximately USD$3,740), with all proceeds going directly to AKC for critical repairs and resources.

An Outpouring of Support

AJ’s challenge quickly gained attention and support from her school community and beyond. Encouragement from classmates, teachers, and family fueled her determination as she steadily made progress around the island. The challenge not only raised awareness but also inspired others to contribute to the cause.

The Result: Mission Accomplished

In a tremendous show of perseverance, AJ completed the 128km ride in just 8 days – surpassing her initial target both in distance and time. Her efforts have so far raised significant funds, with the total still growing as more donations come in. The money raised will help repair AKC’s roof, replace the solar batteries, and, if additional funds are secured, support staffing needs to benefit even more students.

AJ’s journey highlights how even the youngest among us can make a significant impact when driven by compassion and determination. Her achievement is not only a personal triumph but also a testament to the power of community and the difference one small effort can make in the lives of others.
