Early Years Curriculum

The Australian International School (AIS) in Singapore harnesses the vast learning potential and energy of young children through its Early Years program and award-winning campus the Early Learning Village. Our curriculum draws on over 30 years of experience in early childhood education to seamlessly integrate the globally recognised Reggio Emilia philosophy, the Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF), and the IB Primary Years Programme (IB PYP). This blend empowers children to meet key milestones while actively participating in their learning journey within a supportive international community that cherishes love, care, and respect.

A Personalised Approach

Recognising that each child develops at their own pace, educators observe and respond to individual needs, creating learning experiences that match their abilities and interests. For instance, teachers might engage children in storytelling, group discussions, or listening games based on their developmental stage and preferences.

Our Early Years program fosters confident, curious and engaged learners through an inquiry-based approach that encourages children to explore concepts rather than themes, integrating skills and knowledge across various disciplines, including early numeracy, literacy, science, technology, engineering, and art.

The Australian Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) aligns seamlessly with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) to foster well-being and build a strong sense of identity, resilience, creativity, curiosity, and a positive attitude to learning. We believe young children learn best when they engage in meaningful, relevant, and challenging experiences. Play actively supports these opportunities by engaging children in imaginative role-play, collaborative block-building, outdoor exploration, problem-solving games, and creative activities like painting and music-making. These experiences drive their cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and brain development.

Our program ensures continuity as students transition into the elementary years, where the IB PYP further develops their skills and builds on their early foundations. Through units of inquiry and school-wide projects, we raise children’s awareness of global issues like equity and sustainability.

18-Months to 3 Years Old

We provide our youngest learners with opportunities to explore and learn in developmentally appropriate ways through an emergent curriculum which means teachers carefully observe children at play and their interactions with peers and the environment. Using these observations, teachers create curricular extensions, such as seeing keen interest in ocean animals and extending on this by providing different activities in the classroom often called “provocations”  For example, there might be ocean animal-themed playdough activity (creativity, motor-skill development), figures that can be sorted and counted (cognition & numeracy)    All activities align with the EYLF framework to support holistic development.

Collaboration between home and school ensures continuity and strengthens the joy of learning. For example, we might [specific collaboration strategy], encouraging families to take an active role in their child’s education.

Language and Literacy

Language and literacy development begin at birth and evolve throughout the early years. At AIS, we nurture these skills from Infant Care to Elementary School through rich, tailored opportunities for communication. Teachers provide daily speaking and listening activities that are well-matched to children’s developing abilities and interests, drawing upon observations and assessments to plan for progression.

As children progress to our four-year-old classes (P4), we use the PreLit program to build essential pre-literacy skills, such as phonological awareness and oral language. This structured yet flexible framework complements our play-based approach, enabling children to progress at their own pace. PreLit lays the groundwork for reading and aligns with the literacy strategies in our Elementary School, ensuring a seamless transition. For example, children might participate in rhyming activities or sound games that strengthen their readiness for formal reading instruction.

Learn Through Play

During early childhood, children build the foundation for their identity as learners and their ability to make decisions within learning groups. Through play, children develop autonomy, confidence, and the ability to make informed choices. Play provides essential opportunities for cognitive, social, emotional, physical, and brain development.

As children play, they become skilled group members, initiate and complete projects, ask meaningful questions, and explore imaginative worlds. Over time, they construct, define, and negotiate their identity and role within a learning community, actively situating themselves as learners who collaborate, reflect, and grow.
